A Light for the Narrow Path - Janice Keats

Jesus himself offered the message of hope and light when He commanded the demon possessed man to go home to tell his family what the Lord had done. (Mark 5:19). Sharing the light to the dark world is high on God’s wish list. It ought to be our aim to share what the Lord has done for us to those in our homes and neighbourhoods.

The Gospel message is clear to the believer, but to the unbeliever, the Word of God has yet to be heeded, understood or known. The Bible clearly states that the message of God is foolishness to those who are perishing as it is written in, 1 Corinthians 1:18, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved, it is the power of God.” How foolish God’s plan of abundant life must seem to the blinded eye. The believer has the power to demonstrate God’s love in a way that is attractive and sound.

We can seek wise counsel from the Master. Time spent with God will help set the pace for the journey. We may not always know the path in which God will lead us but as we trust in Him we know that our steps are His directions. As long as we follow our true guide, the true light will lead us. Jesus declared in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

As examples of Christ’s followers, we can demonstrate God’s love by living as God commands us. Not only do we have the light to lead the way, we have God’s promises of assurance. The Holy Spirit is our guide and is available to enable any dark alley to shine.

As we spread the light from home to home, or place to place, we can leave behind a spray of love of God knowing that we have pleased the Lord. When our land is fully illuminated we can declare a job well done for the Lord. May we heed Paul’s instructions in Colossians 4:7, “See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.” As we enter into this new year with goals and aspirations may we remember to continue to share the Good News!

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

Taking Your Stand by Janice Keats

There’s something about how music draws a crowd of people, especially when a live band is performing in an outside venue. It happened to me recently. My husband and I were taking a leisurely stroll in a very popular downtown area and we happened to notice a lively band playing very good upbeat music. They were actually very entertaining which was the reason for the large crowd that was gathered.

It wasn’t long before it was revealed that they were a Christian family band. They consisted of fiddle players, singers, and tap dancers. It wasn’t until the leader of the group spoke about God’s love and plan of Salvation that the crowd began to disperse. In the two minutes it had taken to share a simple message, most of the crowd had already walked away. I saw them walk away one by one, then in clusters. The only people that remained were the people who were seated in the front section.

As I watched in complete amazement as to what was evidently taking place, I literally laughed aloud. This is so predictable, I thought. It seemed that the audience had no interest in hearing the Gospel message even though it was a brief two-minute talk between songs. Secular bands do the same, especially when they change instruments or make other adjustments and I have never seen a crowd walk away in large numbers.

My thoughts took me to the story of when Jesus was teaching in a Synagogue in Capernaum. Many of the disciples began to grumble among themselves saying, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” Consequently, many decided right there at that moment to discontinue in the journey with the Lord and turned back. Moments later, Jesus directed an important question to the twelve disciples, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” They didn’t leave. They assured Jesus of their dedication to Him as their Master. (John 6:60-69)

They believed in the Gospel message and willingly took their stand for Christ. Are you willing to stand in the gap and be noticed as a follower of Christ? Or, walk away and denounce Him? Was the Gospel message from the Christian band so difficult that the hearers could not accept it? Or, is the message foolishness to those who are perishing? (1 Corinthians 1:18a)
Could it be as Jesus had foretold in His word? “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4) You see, there was no pretence to the two-minute talk. It was an evening of music and entertainment, which included God’s wondrous story. But the mere mention of the name of Jesus caused many to become uninterested.

“In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6) Taking a stand for Christ enables the Christian to walk in faith. Jesus directed His faith to the Father saying, “I stand with the Father who sent me.” (John 8:16b) What crowd are you journeying with? The band continued with their performance and they weren’t dismayed that few remained. Their joy was evident!

Discovering the Good Jesus by Janice Keats

I had a brief chat with my friend recently who is a Chaplain. He told me about a lady who called him seeking counselling who is in an awkward relationship with her new boyfriend. She said, “I don’t know how to deal with my new boyfriend because he is so good to me. All I was used to was guys who treated me so poorly.”

How interesting, I thought. This statement seems to make sense. How did this lady through all of her love interests only know harsh words and behaviours to discover kindness, love and respect? This lady brings about a very thought provoking scenario. Most women have very stable relationships with their spouses but to someone who actually has had mostly unstable and demeaning relationships must take a little longer to adjust to genuine compassion.

Such genuine compassion is exemplified many times throughout Jesus’ teachings. The Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus where a crowd was gathered at the Mount of Olives. They informed Him that the woman was caught in adultery suggesting she be stoned to death. The frightened woman didn’t know of any “good” male relationships. Nor did she know of the “good” Jesus. To be presented before a large crowd of unknown people following an adulterous encounter must have been shameful.

Or, was it? If that was her lifestyle and if that was all she had known about relationships then what good did she really know and understand? What expression of emotion did she portray? Do you wonder what the people were thinking as Jesus was teaching about His love? When the good teacher was offering the Gospel message the crowd turned their eyes and watched as the Pharisees scurried this woman along. As they became sidetracked by this mob of activity could they have been caused to secretly encircle a few stones beside them in anticipation of her impending death?

While it may have been a custom to stone such woman, Jesus chose to counter the accusation. He challenged the men saying, “if any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.” (John 8:7,9 NIV)

The woman turned and to find that all had left except Jesus. Jesus did not condemn the woman for her life of sin. He showed her that His love and compassion was genuine and He loved her despite her known lifestyle. She realized that someone truly loved her and treated her with dignity and respect. As Jesus advised her to go and sin no more, she walked away free and without condemnation. Do you suppose she went back to the life of sin she was accustomed to? She found the good Jesus. She walked away to learn how to deal with the goodness in her life, Jesus. It was a new beginning!

A Journey to the Heart of Evangelism

Keep Strong in the Lord

It seems that the older we get, the more challenges there are. When we hear of bad news we say, “What next is going to happen?” Strife comes to all of us and it is something that we must endure throughout life. But life is not all bad. We share in joy and laughter when we hear and experience good news.


There is something that each of us can share in regardless of the storms of life and the blessings of happiness, and that is hope! How can we say that we have hope while we live in this world as we know it? Keep in mind that Jesus came to earth to be among us to fulfill the Father’s will. He came to offer hope and life but he suffered and died on a cross so that each one of us may have the opportunity of eternal life. That is our future hope!

He knows the problems that come our way. There is nothing that any one of us can go through that He hasn’t endured himself. In fact, He already suffered more than we could ever fathom but His resurrection was victorious and triumphant. Hebrews 4:14 says, “Therefore since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.”

God sympathizes us in our weaknesses. Our sinless father to whom we cry out and have our hope is our compassionate Father. He asks us to place our hope and confidence in Him. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

In our prayers we can exclaim, “Lord you know my need, you know what I’m going through. I am seeking your grace and mercy to help me. I believe you will Lord, because you understand!”
Take hold of the hope that is yours! Keep strong in the Lord! Do not give up believing that God’s power and grace will carry you through life just as He promised He would.

“You can’t find firm footing in a swamp, but life rooted in God stands firm.” Proverbs 12:3

Lydia - Her Opportunities are Great!

Scripture: Acts 16: 11-15

I picture Lydia as a happy and content woman. It showed in her hospitality when she persuaded her Christian friends to stay at her house when they came to town. Lydia and her guests were worshippers of God. What do you suppose sustained their happiness in worshipping God? I believe they supported each other and shared progress in ministry. Sharing good news among friends generates pure joy in the Lord. It motivates and encourages and builds faith, resulting in being filled with abundant blessings!

There is so much opportunity in the Christian life. There is the opportunity to fellowship, and to experience God’s love and joy in serving Him. Lydia was a servant of God and her community. Perhaps she partnered with others as she ran her business of selling purple cloth. Her joy was from the Lord! God has given each of us gifts and abilities and the opportunity to avail of them. Have we availed of our opportunities and accepted God’s courage to do His Will? His Will has been perfected and chosen for each person. So we can release all that hinders our walk with Him, because He has given His best to us.

We each have the opportunity to share in the peace, the fulfillment and a prosperous life. Much like Lydia’s life. We have been given different gifts but there is one thing that God has given that is the same for everyone. We all have been given the same promises from God! You may wonder what they are. He will give us strength to do His Will. He will give us courage to reach out to others. He promises forgiveness when we go astray, and He promises to be near to the brokenhearted, just to name a few.

God’s Word is full of promises that can never be broken. Psalm 46: 1, 2 says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”
Another promise He provides is, “He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” (Psalm 107:9). We can taste and see that God is good. It requires simple trusting faith, and then we will discover that God is indeed God, and He always come through on His promises. Just ask anyone who has had his or her prayers answered.

A Renewed Focus

It is bewildering how your writing career is like a roller coaster ride. There’s a beginning followed by a continuum of peaks and valleys. Writing, be it novice or professional, is a learning process of developing skills, connecting with editors/publishers, timelines, creativity, disappointments and rejections to name a few.




What if there were few or no attempts put forth to garner those accomplishments and pitfalls that enable us to grow and stretch our abilities? Don’t rewards come from hard work and perseverance? Recently I hooked a magazine with my personal faith story and publication of a review of my book, A Journey to the Heart of Evangelism. Did it come easy? Not at all. My initial contact with the magazine was 10 months ago. I submitted a query about a review of my book and I waited for a response. It was 10 months of waiting and wondering and being placed on hold. In the middle of that came a change in their personnel department. I had to start from the beginning. My assignment was left in limbo, which added to the lengthy delay. Finally there were a few emails of decision making and the actual format and content of what they agreed they would print.




I could have easily given up in mid-stream but I felt the urge to press on. I persevered because, not only did I believe in my product, I wanted a clear answer. If the editor had decided that my query was unsuitable in the beginning I most certainly would have accepted that, but it was merely misconstrued dialogues. At any rate, I was surprised at the pending turn of events. I was most interested in getting my book review published but that connection led me to another opportunity. I received an email from another editor from the same magazine requesting my personal faith story. Wow! What a surprise. That was totally unexpected but I was equally delighted to submit my faith story.




Many times during the process I would ask myself, why do I continue to press on with this? Most people would have given up. I would stop and sigh after reading certain emails and responses from the magazine and then pick up and continue again. I believe God had a plan from the beginning. Publication of my personal faith story was His plan but it was oblivious to me. That was an exciting lesson to learn. I am so glad I followed through and forged ahead when it would have been easier to drop my submission and toss it into my own slush pile. Because of my perseverance, potentially thousands of readers will see and read my faith story. What’s more important and hopeful is that many will be impacted in some small way.

My goals for this year include persevering with my submissions to various magazines with many of my unpublished articles. I also recently completed an audio book of my poems that I must focus on promoting. And, may I add, continue to wait upon God.

Wake Me Up On The Sabbath - Janice Keats

I had the most interesting conversation with an elderly woman recently. She recalls one particular evening she went to bed and when she awoke the next morning she thought that she had slept for two days. She knew she had gone to bed on a Saturday night, but when she arose the next morning she knew it was Sunday but by the actions of her neighbours, she surmised that it must have been Monday morning.

“I peeked outside my bedroom window and I saw a man standing on his house tarring his roof,” she said. Then she proceeded downstairs for breakfast. “When I looked outside my living room window, I noticed a man in front of his home cleaning his car. Another neighbour was painting his house, and yet another was hanging out clothes. Then all of a sudden I had the compulsion to pull out my washer and begin my usual Monday morning wash. First, I asked my son what day it was. He assured me that it was Sunday. I asked him if he was sure because I wanted to get ready for church and I thought I might have slept through Sunday because all the neighbours were outside doing their chores. With her son's reassurance, she went on to church.

She knew what day it was but it would really make you wonder, wouldn’t it? Have we come to a day in our society where it doesn’t matter how we spend our time on Sundays? It is okay to put off our chores for Sunday? Do people pass Sundays by without realizing its significance? What does the Scripture say about Sunday Worship? Genesis 2:2-3 informs us that God chose a special day of the week to rest and we are to keep that day Holy. As followers of God, we are expected to abide by his wishes. But do we? Why would one neighbour choose to keep the Sabbath holy and not the other? The fourth of the Ten Commandments says: “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” Well then, how do we keep it holy? By remembering God, by worshiping our creator, and by honouring Gods command.

1 Thess. 4:7 and 8 says: “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God who gives us his Holy Spirit.”  If people believe that they’re not hurting anyone by living a life pleasing to themselves, they are forgetting about God's feelings. When a person rejects the holy living he also rejects God.

Is it too demanding of God to want our love and obedience? God gave each of us a chance to respond to his pattern for living when he gave His son to be the atoning sacrifice so that you and I may have life through Him. Titus 3:4-6 says: “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”

Why not live for God? No time you say? God’s word says to “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

Who Is Jesus?

Jesus is referred to many names in the Bible. In Isaiah 26:4, He is named the “Rock Eternal.” The verse says: “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the rock eternal.”

When I think about Jesus as being the rock, I think about Him as being firm, steadfast, secure, powerful, solid, unswerving and true. When I think of Jesus as being the “rock eternal,” I think about Him as being true to His promises, certain of who He is.

He promises life abundantly, peace and security in the midst of trouble, and a secured place in heaven if the decision is made to follow Him, trusting and believing His promises. We are held up by His mighty power and He is the rock of all ages.

Psalm 139: 7 – 10 David says: “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens you are there; if I make my bed in the depths you are there; If I ride on the wings of dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me fast.”

Yes, He is worthy of our praise, faith and love and expectations of answered prayers. The Bible says to be thankful in all circumstances of life. Who feels like praising God when we find ourselves in the heavy trials of life? Very few perhaps but our faith allows us to trust no matter what the circumstances are and since Jesus promised that He will never leave us or forsake us, we can learn to rely on Him for strength and guidance. We learn to trust and acquire faith; we learn to lean on the solid rock!

Take a look at 2 Samuel 22:1 – 4 to discover that He is a personal God?

My rock,
My deliverer,
My source of salvation
My stronghold,
My Savior.

Praise God he is a personal rock!

“From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61)

For daily need there is daily grace, for sudden need there is sudden grace, and for overwhelming need there is overwhelming grace!

Who is Jesus? He is the rock that is higher than I.
He knows my needs and yours.

May we all learn to place our trust in Him in all circumstances of life!

Sacrifices of Praise! - Janice Keats

What is the sacrifice of praise? We can begin to understand by analyzing this Scripture.

“But the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm, is the one you must worship. To Him you shall bow down and to Him offer sacrifices. You must always be careful to keep the decrees and ordinances, the laws and commands he wrote for you. Do not worship other gods. Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods. Rather worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.” (2 Kings 17:36-39)


1. To Him you shall bow down. When we bow, God has our attention; we are reverent.

2. Be careful to keep the decrees and ordinances, laws and commands. God has His purposes for us to follow and obey. Be careful that we keep in line with God, be careful that we are obedient to His commands. Remember to keep them, they were written for us to follow.

3. Do not worship other gods. Why not? Other gods are misleading, other gods takes your mind off the true and living God. Remember, God is a jealous God.

4. Rather, worship the Lord your God. Why? He will deliver you from the enemy. His arm is outstretched with power. The Lord your God is in control.

To Him you shall bow down and offer sacrifices….
To Him belongs the praise and glory!

5. Do not forget the covenant I made with you.
And yet the people served Him and idols too. What sacrifice is there in serving two masters? Or, many idols? What do we sacrifice? Our time, talents, reverence, worship at home, and in God’s house. Taking time out for God is a sacrifice of praise and worship. We choose not to focus on self but Him!

Evidently, the Israelites didn’t listen to these commands. They honored the Lord and they worshiped idols at the same time. Hezekiah did what was right and the Lord ordered him to destroy the places where other gods were worshiped. Did you know that the Scriptures speak well of God’s righteous people? 2Kings 18:7 says: “And the Lord was with Hezekiah and had success in everything he did.”

When we follow God's ways in life He gives us peace. Psalm 85:8 says: “I will listen to God the Lord. He has ordered peace for those who worship him….”

May you be drawn closer to Him today!

Walk Hand in Hand With God to Make His Purposes Known - Janice Keats

In the beginning of my search for God, I became very inquisitive. I wanted to know all about God and why I was feeling the struggle of wanting to attend church and at the same time live my life of normality of the world. As time went on I found myself listening to Christian music, reading the Bible, and asking many, many questions. One such question I asked my friend was, “Why is it that when I am in church I feel really good and when I go home I fall into a slumber of emptiness again?” She replied, “You know Jan, you can take Jesus home with you.” After several more months of soul searching, I did take Jesus home with me. Those words have always remained on my mind.

In our Christian journey we are not only to take Jesus home but to take him along with us on our path in life. We are his hands extended. Even though we do not see his physical body walking beside us, we have his awesome power. We have the wonders of old to recollect, and we have his guidance and grace to fulfill his mission.

Jesus saw a need from the days of old. His people, the Israelites, were held in captivity in Egypt. Following the death of Joseph, a new king emerged who knew nothing about Joseph and his supremacy. The king saw that the Israelites became large in number and was threatened by this increase for fear that they may join forces with his enemies. God’s army would be greater and would in turn defeat the Egyptians. So, in attempt to halt God’s army, the king put the slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor. (Exodus 1:8-14)

God had a plan of action. How could God accomplish the task without the help of his people? He knew the need because of their cries to him. “God heard their misery and their crying out because of their slave drivers.” (Exodus 3:7) God hears the cries of pain and misery of his children everywhere, even right where you live. God already has a plan for their release from suffering. Who will go and deliver God’s message of love? Who will take God’s hand and walk into the community of needs? Who can hear the moans and groans of the sick and the lonely? Who will share the heart of God?

Out of compassion, God saw fit to send Moses and Aaron to rescue his people from the hands of the Egyptians. Was the task too hard for them? After all there were being sent to the ruthless one. It was no easy task. God is the leader; he leads the way to safety. He needs our help with his work!!! No one else can go or do with what God has planned specifically for you. It’s no use to tell God that someone else should go. The Lord did not accept that response when Moses suggested it.

If God is specifically speaking to you, he will give to you his power for the journey. God is pleased with His faithful ones. “You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.” (Psalm 77:20)
Look what two people can do with the help from on high!!! The Lord is my Shepherd; the Lord is your Shepherd. The Lord is Shepherd over all. Jump in on the journey and discover for yourself God’s purposes!

Do We Know When God Disciplines Us?

Scripture: Hebrews 12: 1-13

Since we can become so entangled in sin, the Bible tells us to throw off all that hinders us. God knows what those things are, and we ought to be aware of any sin that may be a hindrance to our walk with God. If we become all wrapped up in sin, we become entangled. When we become entangled, where are our thoughts? In the web or heart of sin of course.

God says to throw it off and make a run for it. Throw off the sin and persevere or chase the plan that God has marked for us. When our focus is on Jesus we don’t have to become entangled. Jesus disentangled the web of sin on the cross. With the joy set before Him, “He endured the cross scorning its shame.” (Hebrews 12:2b)

This is the same joy and hope we can now possess and are running toward. Consider how our Savior endured opposition from sinful men. Let us not forget that like Jesus, we too face temptation and scorn. Do you hear him saying, don’t lose heart, I will encourage you until you finish the race?

How do we stand the test of faith when we are persecuted or struggling with sin? Paul endured hardship to the point of being chained like a criminal. Hebrews 12:4 says, “Have you not resisted to the point of shedding your blood?” Have you not let go and dealt with your sins? Jesus, the sinless One submitted His will.

Can we surrender our all and be like Jesus? Why do we sometimes resist and continue to struggle with sin? Have we forgotten God’s promises of encouragement and truth? We must allow God to discipline us lovingly. He disciplines us for our own good, that way we may share in His Holiness. What a delight!

As God disciplines His dearly loved children as true sons and daughters, He picks us up by the collar and offers reassurance that He is in charge and corrects us when we do wrong. Hebrews 12:8b says, “If we are not disciplined we are illegitimate, we are not true sons.” God disciplines out of love. We ought to allow God to lead us aright. We cannot live a holy life in a web of sin. We must throw off all that hinders us and get right with God so that we can know His holiness, righteousness and peace. Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Thoughts:

-Gods Word tells us to be aware of the devils schemes. Are you aware of any type of tricks that the devil may have attempted with you?
- Are you open and honest with God with your shortcomings or perhaps unconfessed sin?
-Are you trusting God to help you with your brokenness? How?
-Can you witness to the harvest of righteousness that came out of a personal trial?

God's Gift of Authority

One day as Jesus was preaching in the temple courts, the priests and the teachers of the law challenged Him, “Tell us, by what authority you are doing these things? Who gave you this authority?”

Among the crowd were experienced teachers of the law and elders, and leaders of the people. Suddenly, Jesus comes along preaching the good news of eternal life. Do you think that these leaders could have been threatened by His presence? Was Jesus convincing to them? Perhaps in their minds they could not deny God’s power of authority.

According to Matthew 7:28, the crowds were amazed at His teaching and they acknowledged Him. “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching because He taught as one who had authority, and not as teachers of the law.” What was the difference then? It was this: Jesus responded to the challenge of the priests and teachers by asking if John’s baptism was from heaven or from men. After some discussion, they could not answer. But the answer was clear; the authority came from heaven. Jesus said: “My Father is always at work to this very day, and I too, am working. I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his father doing because whatever the father does the Son does also.” (John 5:17 &18)

As believers, God gives us authority also. We probably have the concept of having the authority to drive out Satan or rebuke sin when we have to. That may be so, but the authority that God gives is the authority to build up the church. (2 Cor. 10:8) It is for building up not for tearing down. Using God’s gift of authority means availing of God’s power.

Jesus gave the disciples power and authority to cure diseases and drive out demons but also to preach the Kingdom of God. We can build the church fearlessly and with great confidence. We can build up the body of Christ and we can continue to preach Salvation. There is a profound verse that is worthy of mentioning: “For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.” (2 Cor. 13:8)

Remember the question, Jesus asked? Was John’s baptism from heaven or from man? If it were from man there would be little convincing or conviction. When work is ongoing to benefit the Kingdom of heaven, God will give us the authority to make His truth and purposes known. That’s what makes all the difference in all we do! Whatever we do, do as though working for the Lord! Go in the strength of the Lord. Amen!

When Heavy Prayer is Needed - Jan Keats

I was fingering through my collection of books one day and I came across an old receipt that was tucked in part way though one of the books. I picked up the fragile receipt and quickly became startled. The first item of transaction was “Prayer, heavy.” When I saw those words I was very surprised. “How could I purchase heavy prayer at Canadian Tire?” I thought. I couldn’t read the second item of purchase. Puzzled I looked and squinted my eyes on the receipt trying to figure out what heavy prayer could be.

What is heavy prayer? What does it look like? What aisle did I find it in? Finally as I looked more intently I noticed another letter in front of the word Prayer. It read, “Sprayer, Heavy.” The ‘S’ was slightly faded off the paper which then became “prayer.” Then I remembered that my husband and I purchased a heavy sprayer several months prior to use on our vehicles. I concluded that this was meant to be a devotional message to share. It certainly was an eye opener.

What is heavy prayer? We know that prayer is conversation with God. We also know that God always answers our prayers whether it is yes, no, or wait. But what is the determining factor when we go before Him? Is our approach to God’s throne dependant upon our need for the moment? Or for an ongoing need?

Is there anything that prevents our prayers from being answered? If it’s faith then what happened to our faith? The devil may have a stronghold on God’s people, much like the days of Pharoah. Perhaps our people have not yet cried out to God to be rescued. Where does the devil work at his best? Among God’s people, of course. Where does he throw in a little confusion and strife and schemes? Among God’s people, of course.

Sometimes along the Christian Journey all kinds of negative thoughts and turmoil may interfere with walking in peace and harmony with the Master.

If we don’t lose heart during the discouraged moments then we have overcome the same temptations that Jesus Himself suffered. How do we then keep forging ahead? Just remember when we fall back, come back! Don’t even entertain the idea of falling back and staying back. Jesus didn’t remain in the garden when He was perhaps at His weakest moment. He prayed to the Father and proceeded to follow His Father’s Will; yes, even death on a cross. Each of God’s children has the opportunity to pray and continue in the journey. That’s where peace is! That’s where joy is! That’s where we belong, in the everlasting arms of the Father!

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
(I Corinthians 10:13NIV)

Keep strong in the Lord! He will light your path along the journey!
When you give your burdens to God. What will He do? He will take it. Pass your burdens over to Him and be comforted by the gentleness of the Father.

Finding Fulfillment - Jan Keats

“I will listen to God the Lord. He has ordered peace for those who worship Him!” (Psalm 85:8 NIV)
My daughter and I love to shop together. On one occasion something made me realize that shopping wasn’t just something to do, it was a bonding time between a mother and daughter.

At a clothing store one Saturday, we picked out a few articles and proceeded to the change rooms. We found stalls next to each other and we were soon engaged in a wonderful chat about our findings, among other things. Suddenly we heard a voice from the adjacent stall saying, “You two must be mother and daughter.” We both acknowledged that we were. Then the mysterious elderly lady’s voice said somberly, “I never had a daughter; listening to you both makes me wish that I had. You seem to be really close. I have a son whom I love dearly, but my son doesn’t like to shop,” she chuckled.

We were speechless, hoping to say something to appease her sorrowful and unfulfilled heart. At the same time we realized how grateful we were to have a special mother/daughter relationship. Neither of us saw that elderly woman. She left the change room before we did. We were having too much fun trying on clothes.

Throughout the rest of the day, we couldn’t get that woman off our minds. She must be so lonely, I thought. I wondered if she had found fulfillment in life. We didn’t know anything about her, yet our hearts ached for her. Was she widowed? Was she living all alone? Does her son live nearby? Did she browse the shopping centres frequently to fill the void in her life? Did she know God? We simply didn’t know.

But God knows. The woman was blessed with a son, yet she hoped to have had a daughter to bond with. The woman was also blessed with a long life, yet it seemed she was feeling empty and unfulfilled in her senior years. Even through her blessings, she had a longing for peace. The Bible says that God is the peace and joy giver. His promises are for her. His uncompromising peace is for her. Psalm 4:11a says, “But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.”

How about you? Are you content and at peace with God? Fulfillment comes through trusting and walking daily with God. Your life is carved into his hand. As I remember the lonely woman, and how I was caused to feel her emptiness, I pray that she will find the peace and contentment she is longing for. Proverbs 30:5 says, “Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.”
Lord, help us to seek and find fulfillment when we feel empty and lonely. We believe you are the true source of life, who offers peace and joy to everyone.

Don't Give up, You're on the Brink of a Miracle

On Christmas Eve, a lady whom I will call Sandra, came to our ministry in dire need. She had fallen it seemed, into the bottomless pit of despair after she decided to make a career change. She was a teacher and was becoming weary of her profession so she decided to study another vocation. Shortly after changing course she was involved in a car accident, which left her partially crippled, needing a wheelchair at home and she depended on crutches outside the home.

As a result of opting out of teaching she no longer had a medical plan. That’s when her life began to spiral out of control. The mortgage payments could no longer be met. The bills began to pile up, she could no longer work and there was no money coming in. Eventually, she lost her home so her 3 children had to be moved out to separate homes and she had nowhere to go. Even her wheelchair was confiscated. Her car became her new home. Finally, her friend reached out on her behalf and got her the help she so desperately needed.

Where was her hope? How far does a person have to sink before the burden is lifted? When does a miracle occur? When there’s hope of course. It is hope that we must cling to. There is something that each of us can share regardless of the storms of life, and the blessings of happiness and that is hope!! How can we say that we have hope while we live in this world as we know it? Keep in mind that Jesus came to earth to be among us to fulfill the Father’s will. He came to offer hope and life but He suffered and died on a cross so that each one of us may have the opportunity of eternal life. That is our hope!

He knows the problems that come our way. There is nothing that any one of us can go through that He hasn’t endured himself. In fact, He already suffered more than we could ever fathom. His resurrection, however, was victorious and triumphant. Hebrews 4:14 says: “Therefore since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.”

God sympathizes us in our weaknesses. Our sinless Father to whom we cry out and have our hope is our compassionate Father. He asks us to place our hope and confidence in Him. Verse 16 says: “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. In our prayers we can say with confidence: “Lord you know my need, you know what I’m going through. I am seeking your grace and mercy to help me. I believe you will Lord because you understand!"

But wait, the story gets worse. Sandra had planned to commit suicide, but at the moment of contemplation she had her youngest child in the car with her and wouldn’t go through with it. You see, she began to give us more information. In a three-month period, her sister died, her sister’s husband committed suicide and her father died of a heart attack. That was the breaking point. She came to us like a broken vessel. We consoled her and took care of her. We packed toys for her children, we gave her warm clothing, and we made referrals to seek the help she needed.

How could we possibly understand her situation? We could only offer hope. Surprisingly when I walked her to her car, she felt a little better. I assured her that it would get better. “See, there is a glimmer of hope, isn’t there?” I said. She gave me a smile. I will continue to pray for Sandra and her children. She must be on the road to recovery by now. After all, God’s love and hope is for everyone. May we each take hold of the hope that is ours! Why must we cling to the old rugged cross? Because no one is exempt from despair. We must not give up believing that God’s power and grace carries us through life just as He promised he would.

A Christmas Family Tradition - Janice Keats

The cheerful shout echoed as dad was strutting his way upstairs, “Everybody up! Santa was just here!” All kids made record time getting up out of bed. There was no line up for the washroom, just a quick “get out of my way” as all 8 kids raced their way downstairs. What a wonderful sight to see a gathering of kids crowded in and around the Christmas tree half way under with just their bottoms sticking out grasping for their gifts. It was as if they were summoned to find that pot of gold under the tree; each child wanted to be the first to find it.

Soon a field of Christmas paper was strewn across the living room. No one cared about the mess, even if it was 2:30 in the morning. Not Dad, not Mom, not even Grandma who delightfully watched the excitement from her rocking chair with her feet obscured from the sea of paper. The air filled with excitement as the gifts were revealed. “I got a Barbie voyager!” Glenda shouted.
“I got my hockey skates!” Lorne added. Eleanor’s dream came true as her gift was being opened. She cried when she discovered that she had a brand new guitar. Filled with emotion she could barely speak. Mom and dad were so happy that everyone was satisfied with Santa’s choices. When all the unwrapping was completed, Dad got up and said, “I’m going to bed now. Make sure all the lights are turned off when you kids go back to bed.”

There was no sleep left in anyone’s eyes except Dad’s. As he exited the living room and slowly made his way upstairs to bed, the mountain of paper was moved out of the way as each one took possession of their new toys.

Faith Like A Rock

A co-worker continually enters my office for a brief chat about life, family issues, health concerns etc. He has had brain surgery several years ago, and suffers from seizures periodically. He’s been having complications due to differing medical prescriptions that doctors prescribe to get the seizures under control. What’s so amazingly funny is that each visit there is a different bruise located somewhere on his body.

On one occasion he had a fall and he came in my office with a bruised eye, a large lump on his head and a badly scraped knee. I asked what happened and he replied, “Oh I had a seizure and just fell while walking down the street.” Another day he came in and his eye was badly bruised and his glasses were all scratched up. I faced him and laughed because he was so nonchalant about it. He had taken another fall.

This scene repeated itself over and over in my office. It was as though he was preparing for a spot in a movie and each time getting more make-up on for a crash scene. Even though Jimmy was seriously ill, he appeared to be healthy and strong. Without a doubt he had strong faith. Among our conversations was a discussion about his faith in God. Even if he were to die sitting in my office chair he said that he was ready to go and he showed no fear. His confidence in God’s promises was reassuring.

Suddenly, I was taken away from the sight of the bruises and bumps and scrapes, I saw a man who was as steady as a rock. According to the Bible, this rock is Jesus.

Jesus is referred to many names in the Bible. In Isaiah 26:4, he is named the “Rock Eternal” The verse reads: “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the rock eternal.”

When I think about Jesus as being the rock, I think about Him as being firm, steadfast, secure, powerful, solid, unswerving and true. When I think of Jesus as being the “rock eternal,” I think about Him as being true to His promises, certain of who He is.

He promises life abundantly, peace and security in the midst of trouble, and a secured place in heaven if the decision is made to follow Him and trust Him and believe his promises. We are held up by His mighty power and He is the rock of all ages.

Psalm 139: 7 – 10 David says: “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens you are there; if I make my bed in the depths you are there; If I ride on the wings of dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me fast.”

Yes, He is worthy of our praise, faith and love and expectations of answered prayers. The Bible says to be thankful in all circumstances of life. Who feels like praising God when we find ourselves in the heavy trials of life? Very few perhaps but our faith allows us to trust no matter what the circumstances are and since Jesus promised that he will never leave us or forsake us, we can learn to rely on Him for strength and guidance. We learn to trust and acquire faith; we learn to lean on the solid rock!

May we all learn to place our trust in Him in all circumstances of life!

How is Your Faith?

Sometimes along the Christian Journey all kinds of negative thoughts and turmoil may interfere with walking in peace and harmony with the Master.
There are ways to determine whether or not the view of the narrow road is still visible and known. Study the following questions and test for yourself to see if you’re lined up with God’s expectations in living a fruitful Christian life.

When you are standing among a crowd does your light still shine?
Do you still possess the joy of the Lord?
Do you feel that you are somehow distanced between you and your God?
Is His message of love still in your heart?
Have you experienced God’s forgiveness?
Are you still able to openly declare that you belong to Jesus?
Do you secretly pass judgement on fellow Christians?
Do you miss His loving touch? His presence near you?
Do you possess the fruits of the Spirit?
How is your prayer life? Have you been neglecting to meet with God?

Be honest. It may be difficult to admit that we are not up to His standards even when legitimate circumstances interfere with our relationship with God. God still knows those who are His. Despite our shortcomings and weaknesses in any of these 10 thought provoking questions, God still waits for us to come alongside Him. He will still pull up that chair and sit beside us when we come to Him in faith. When we fail Him, we must remember that he will not forsake us. When we praise Him we must remember how we please Him.

Experiencing Joy in the Home

2 Timothy 2: 14-26

What makes a happy home? It is a home where Jesus and His love is known. It is a home where the fruits of the Spirit are observable and evident. The dwelling place ought to shine for God’s glory so that everyone can see the good works that God has chosen for us to do.

What about the home of the mind, body and soul? In order for our homes to be happy we need a pure heart, a pure mind, body and soul. Our personal closets need to be purified to be a worker approved by God. The Bible tells us to “pursue righteousness, faith and love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:22)

God expects his workers to be cleansed. “All who cleanse themselves will become special utensils, dedicated and useful to the owner of the house, ready for every good work.” (2 Timothy 2:21) The Scriptures tell us that in order to prepare ourselves for good work, we are to be clean, dedicated, useful and ready. Then we will become special utensils.

God’s word also tells us that not all workers are alike. “In a large house there are utensils not only of gold or silver but also of wood and clay, some for special use and some for ordinary.” (2Timothy 2:20) God does not expect us to work beyond our capabilities, however. There is a different work for every different utensil. And we know that each utensil is special.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10, lists our different gifts. Some are given gifts of wisdom, knowledge, healing, prophecy and discernment. God understands and knows our talents but there is one gift that we all possess and that is the gift of love. We are told in 1 Corinthians 13, whatever the gifts we are given, if we try to use them without love we are nothing. “If we have faith but do not have love, we are nothing. Love bears all things, believes all things, and endures all things.”

Let us be good workers approved by God by using the gifts we have. Verse 15 says: “Do your best to present yourselves to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed rightly explaining the word of truth.” Do all to the glory of God! Amen!
