My Shadow Mentors
When I consider who
Shadow mentored me
I think of all the books I’ve read
Since I first learned to read
It started with Dr. Seuss
Who showed me words are fun
And then there was Trixie Belden books
About finding the guilty one
~
When I consider who
Shadow mentored me
I think of Catherine Marshall
And her famous book: Christy
There’s also her nonfiction
Which taught me Christ is close
When I’m humble and honest
Within the prayers I pose
~
When I consider who
Shadow mentored me
I must nod to all the books I’ve read
For they’re part of my history.

Many of your blog posts are part of my history too, dear writing friends.

I'm nosy-to-know if you loved reading Dr. Seuss?
I read his books to my grandson now. So much fun.
Enjoyed your poem, Wendy. Oh yes, I loved Dr. Seuss, Trixie Belden too. And, Catherine Marshall was there early in my life as well. Seems we share some common threads.
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear Brenda. I thoroughly enjoyed your post. It was just what I needed.
DeleteC.S.Lewis is also one of my favorite writers.

Awesome rhythm! What we read does shape us and our writing. Green Eggs and Ham is still my favourite Dr. Suess from childhood and now read to my grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear Lynn. I often think of Green Eggs and Ham when cooking ham. 😂
DeleteYes, we are what we believe, eat, and read. Aren't grands grand to read to?

Enjoyed this poem, Wendy. I've been struggling to write for this month's prompt but your poem helps me to see that it doesn't have to be complicated or 'profound' - and I like that you expressed what I was thinking. Books of all sorts are like mentors.
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear Tracy. I couldn't agree more that: "Books of all sorts are like mentors."
DeleteYesterday, while reading children's books aloud to my grandson, I was encouraged by the good messages in them. Some were perfect words of wisdom for writers too.

I enjoyed your poem, Wendy, and this reminder of Dr. Seeuss. One of his books I remember reading a lot is"Mr. Brown CanMoo. Can You?? The book looked like a much-loved teddybear by the time the grandkids arrived.
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear Sharon. Would you believe I read the board book version of Mr.Brown to my grandson today? We both do all the sounds together at the end. 💙😂📚
DeleteIt's on it's way to looking like a beloved teddy bear.

Wendy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing some of your mentors :) I don't remember reading Dr. Seuss growing up, but I definitely read many of his books with my kids. A couple of our favourites were Horton Hears a Who and Green Eggs and Ham.
Dear Ruth, you have me curious about Horton. I just checked and we have it in a hardback compilation edition. Guess what I will be reading the next time my grandson is here? :)

Wendy, I'm sure you will both enjoy Horton :) There is now a movie available too!
DeleteBonus. We'll have to watch it one day with him. ☺️
DeleteOh the Places You'll Go
ReplyDeleteOh the Thinks You Can Think
That's a fun one too. Thank you, dear Colleen.

Oh yes to Dr. Seuss. And Christy for sure. Many book mentors for me.

Thank you, dear Janis. We can't help but form a bond with an author after spending hours reading their written words.

Hi Wendy! Your post was a nostalgic trip for me. Thank you for your poetic turn of our theme. I have to admit I'm not familiar with Trixie Belden books. I do, however, still thrill at Dr. Seuss stories. In my younger years I loved reading about Peter Marshall. This led to me reading about his wife, Catherine, as well. She was quite an interesting person in her own right. Please writing, my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Alan. The book, A Man Called Peter, is an excellent example of God using a bad situation for good. Catherine Marshall wrote her books about her late husband and his sermons after he died and those books not only helped the world know more about God and Peter Marshall, they helped prevent a widow (her) from falling into poverty. She was told her situation was desperate, and she handed her concerns to the God who helped her use the gift she was given to gift many readers with her Spirit-inspired words.
DeleteYes, let's keep writing, my friend.
Thanks for bringing back memories of Dr. Seuss, Wendy! Although I forget the exact wording, my favourite lines came from my cousin, whose last name was "Foat". "You can read them on a boat, you can read them with a Foat."
ReplyDeleteAll of Catherine Marshall's books have been inspirations to me. "Christy", with its setting and vivid characters spoiled me for less adept fiction.
Dear Sandi, your cousin sounds like quite the delightful ham (pun intended). Green Eggs and Ham is stuck in many minds, I'm sure.
DeleteYes, the setting of "Christy" spoiled me too. It was the cover picture that won my interest when I spotted it in a bookstore. I had no idea the treat I was in for.
